TL;DR

Promise yourself only 5 minutes. Kit on, out the door. You'll almost never stop after 5.

Why this matters

The NHS lists 'being active' as one of five evidence-based steps for mental wellbeing — starting is the hardest part.

The hardest part of any session is not the session — it's putting your shoes on. This rule takes that decision off the table.

  • 1Promise yourself only 5 minutes. Kit on, out the door, to the end of the road.
  • 2If after 5 minutes you want to stop, you can — no guilt, no self-talk about it.
  • 3You almost never stop. Starting is the whole battle.
  • 4Do this three times this week. Notice the pattern.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • ×Trying to negotiate up to 30 minutes on day one — you'll skip.
  • ×Waiting for motivation. Motivation shows up after you start, not before.
  • ×Feeling guilty when you only do 5. That was the whole promise.

LEVEL UP

  • Stack it: after morning coffee, 5-minute walk.
  • Do 5 minutes in the rain. It's never as bad as you thought.
  • Teach the rule to someone else. That's how it sticks.
