TL;DR
The voice saying 'I can't' is a habit, not the truth. Notice it. Rename it. Choose kinder words.
Why this matters
The NHS recommends kind self-talk and connection as two of the five ways to mental wellbeing.

That voice telling you you can't, you're too slow, everyone's watching — it's not you. It's a habit. And habits can be changed.
- 1When it says "I can't do this" — notice it. Say silently: "that's my fear talking."
- 2Swap "I have to go" for "I get to go." Small words, big shift.
- 3Talk to yourself like you'd talk to a friend who is trying. Kinder. Softer. Braver.
- 4Say the thing out loud on your walk. Weird, but it works.
COMMON MISTAKES
- ×Trying to silence the voice — you can't. You can just change what follows it.
- ×Making the kinder version fake ('I'm amazing!'). Aim for honest and warm, not smug.
- ×Only trying it once. This is a muscle.
LEVEL UP
- ↑Journal for two minutes after a hard session — what did the voice say? What was actually true?
- ↑Speak to yourself out loud in the third person. Weirdly effective.
- ↑Ask a mate: 'What would you tell me right now?' — use their words.
